Clara YouMei

A longing fulfilled...

She came off the elevator in Jenny's arms around 2:30. She was taken to a separate room with all of the other babies. She had to go potty so we we had to wait longer than any other family. She was handed to us by a stranger (someone from her original orphanage), but Jenny and Katrina (medical director of TCH) were right behind her. She was a little hesitant, but she let me take her out of the strangers arms. She looked at me, then tried to get down until I showed her a sucker. She quickly took it and relaxed. She didn't seem to mind the noise from the other crying babies. She sat on my lap while the boys showed her their gifts. She let Jackson show her all of the pages of the Dora book and she hugged the bear from Carter. She ate Cheerios and Smarties with her sucker while we waited for Aaron to sign some papers. She shared her Cheerios with all of us. She put one in my mouth and let me feed her. She pointed to her brothers and said Guh Guh (big brother). She smiled when Aaron said "all gone" after she dropped a Smartie. She likes my locket that has her picture inside. She left with us and looked around curiously as we got on our bus. She is ticklish under her chin. She was content to be worn in a sling while we shopped at the Carrefoure. She wanted to hold the panties we picked out for her. She pointed to a yogurt drink and we put 2 packages in our shopping cart. She looked at me and said Mama while we waited to pay for our items. She went potty when we got back to the hotel room. She was wearing the pajamas that we sent her under her outfit. She is tinier than I ever imagined. She looked in the mirror with me and repeated "You You" and "MaMa" as we pointed at each other and ourselves. She pointed to the soap and let me help her wash her hands. She laughed and laughed while Carter and Jackson blew up balloons for her and let them fly all over the room. She started repeating lots of words. She repeated me when I said "Mama eye nee" (Mama loves you). She ate some cereal, a yougurt drink, some rice, green pepper, mushroom and bread. She let me give her a bath and played in the water for a long time. She watched Aaron make her a bottle and after her bath she pointed to it. She let me hold her and give her a bottle but she only drank an ounce or so. She pointed to her crib (more like a pack-n-play). She let me lay her down then cried out. She wanted down and began to walk around. She played with the phone a few minutes. She did not get a nap today but did not want to go to sleep. She let me look at a book with her for a few minutes then she walked to the hotel door and tried to open it. She shed her first tears when I picked her up. She cried and cried for 30 minutes and finally fell asleep in my arms.

She has a family now. She is a sister, grandaughter, niece, cousin. She is a daughter to us and a daughter of the King.

  56. I've waited all day to get home and read this post! I checked as soon as I got up this morning but had to leave for school before anything was up. I am so, so happy for all of you. She is beautiful and I am crying. WOW- between the writing and the pictures I felt like I was right there as it happened. She knows in her head that you are her mama and it is easy to see that her heart is not very far behind. What a blessing for all of you. God knew before the foundation of the world that You You was going to be a Hammond. All the twists and turns in that path lead you to this moment and she is now with you. Amazing!
    Blessings to all of you-

She is beautiful and she looks as if she has been with you her whole little life!!! God has answered your prayers and your freinds and family's prayers for you. It is such a blessing that things went so sweetly your first day togeather. You will remember it forever!!! Thanks to you, we will too. We will continue to pray for special bonding moments and for her to feel more and more comfortable with you Aaron and the boys. 63. Erica/Denise...

Gail talked with your dad/John a few minutes ago and he said he was doing well and enjoying the pictures and posts. He said to let you know that he would love to talk with you if it could be worked out, but not to worry about him; he is fine but said he couldn't wait until you get home.

Gail wants to know Clara YouMei's approximate weight and height. You know the typical questions asked.

    Love you all,

  65. 64 posts!

All day I kept thinking of how adoption is such a beautiful picture of Christ.....now I know everything I'm writing isn't EXACT, but it's such a vibrant metaphor that it stuck in my head all day. Like Christ, you went ahead and "prepared a place for her." You chose Clara YouYou not because of anything special, but she was chosen to be in your family. (As Christ chooses us). She's adopted and has all the priveleges and joys of being part of the Hammond Family! And though you speak a language she doesn't know yet (as Christ speaks love to us and at first, all we know is sin), she may find it hard to leave all that she knows behind-- because she doesn't fully grasp yet how MUCH better things will be! (as we sometimes cling to sin and whine about the ways God chastens our hearts & shapes us).

It is exciting to see you living out the kingdom in such a personal way. Blessings to your whole family!

    --chris f
PS: Do you have a porta-crib still at home? You can borrow mine, if you need it (it's BLUE though:-) When Johnny was 2, we tried bumping him up to a bed while travelling and he WOULD NOT sleep... he felt safer in a crib. I remembered you were planning to use a toddler bed at home and thought of our experience w/ John, just wondered if you have a crib as back up.

Wishing ALL of you lots of sleep, peace, and humor to get through tricky communication!

  66. NOT that I am stalking your blog; after all, it is 10:45 p.m. here. So I know yall are right in the middle of your first full day with beautiful You You! So of course I am not expecting an update yet. Not really.
But the Lord reminded me of a quote I saw in the orthodontist office last week. I loved it so much I wrote it down.
"Each child is an adventure into a better life--an opportunity to change the old pattern and make it new" Hubert H. Humphrey
    I love that!
Love you and praying for you tonight, or your today, you know what I mean! ;)

I have been going crazy today. We had to leave today at 6:00 AM for Birmingham and at that time the blog was not updated. I even text Aimee and was asking for the blog. We had a full day at the International Adoption Clinic (6 hours). As soon as I got home, I came to the computer and what did I see---a beautiful family of five that is now complete. All those memories of the past few month came flooding back. There is nothing like when you meet your child for the first time. You forget all about the wait. She is worth every minute that you have waited for her. God chose You You and its obvious that she loves her family. I love all the pictures. What a beautiful child God has blessed you with again. Tell those big brothers they are doing a wonderful job. We love you and cant wait to see more..more...more photos.
